Israel-Iran tension sparks new concern in US

Israelis fear an attack from Iran, but there is a heated debate over what should be done about it. NBC's Stephanie Gosk reports.

By msnbc.com staff and NBC News

Amid Israeli accusations that Iran is striking out at Jewish targets around the world, U.S. officials say they are concerned but haven?t ramped up security to ?high alert? as a result.

That news comes after?several Iranians were blamed for three?explosions in Bangkok on Tuesday. Those blasts followed bomb attacks on Monday that targeted Israeli embassy staff in India and Georgia. Israel has accused Iran and its Lebanese ally Hezbollah of being behind the attacks.

Iran has denied any involvement.

On Wednesday, FBI, Homeland Security, and local police officials told NBC News' Pete Williams that?it was misleading to describe the security establishment as?"on high alert" as a result of the overseas bombing incidents.

Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said at a budget hearing Wednesday that "the U.S. is constantly monitoring Hezbollah activities around the world. We are reaching out to particularly the Jewish community .... Just last week, we had a conference call with leaders of the Jewish community and we remain in constant touch. Right now, we know of no specific or credible threat, but it bears watching."

Last week, the FBI and Homeland Security sent an advisory to local law enforcement noting that the tensions between Iran and Israel have contributed "to the perception of an increased threat to the Jewish community worldwide from Iran or its surrogates."? But it says there's nothing specific to indicate that "Iran or its surrogates are targeting Jewish organizations, facilities, or personnel in the United States."

A spokesman for the New York Police Department told WNBC's Jonathan Dienst that?police are maintaining the "same focus over the?last several weeks" and that they know of "nothing specific but are paying close attention to Israeli facilities and synagogues."

And the Anti-Defamation League says it is not aware of "any immediate threats to Jewish institutions in the United States at this time. However, we are recommending that Jewish institutions operate with increased vigilance and urge you to take the following action steps," ADL says.

Moody's warns may downgrade 17 global banks, securities firms (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? Moody's warned on Thursday it may cut the credit ratings of 17 global and 114 European financial institutions in another sign that the impact of the euro zone government debt crisis is spreading throughout the global financial system.

The U.S. rating agency said its action on financial institutions from 16 European nations reflected the impact of the debt crisis and deteriorating creditworthiness of its governments.

It cited more fragile funding conditions, increased regulatory burdens and a tougher economic environment for its review of banks and securities firms with global reach.

Moody's salvo follows rounds of downgrades in European sovereign ratings as the euro zone's struggle to keep its weakest link Greece afloat has been driving up borrowing costs and straining finances of other nations.

Last Monday, Moody's cut the ratings of six European nations including Italy, Spain and Portugal and warned it could strip France, Britain and Austria of their top-level AAA grade.

Last month, Standard & Poor's cut France's and Austria's top ratings and downgraded seven other euro zone nations. It also cut the euro zone's bailout fund by one notch.

Moody's said it was reviewing the long-term ratings and standalone credit assessments of Bank of America (BAC.N), Citigroup (C.N), Goldman Sachs (GS.N), JPMorgan Chase (JPM.N), Morgan Stanley (MS.N) and Royal Bank of Canada (RY.TO).

The long-term ratings and standalone credit review of European banks includes Barclays (BARC.L), BNP Paribas (BNPP.PA), Credit Agricole (CAGR.PA), Deutsche Bank (DBKGn.DE), HSBC (HSBA.L), Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS.L) and Societe Generale (SOGN.PA).

Moody's said it was also extending the reviews of the long-term ratings and standalone credit assessments of Credit Suisse (CSGN.VX), Macquarie (MQG.AX), Nomura (8604.T) and UBS

(UBSN.VX) (UBS.N).

"Capital markets firms are confronting evolving challenges, such as more fragile funding conditions, wider credit spreads, increased regulatory burdens and more difficult operating conditions," Moody's said in a statement.

As a result, the longer-term profitability and growth prospects of the institutions under review had diminished.

In its review of European banks, Moody's said that once it is completed, the ratings will "fully reflect the currently foreseen adverse credit drivers."

European banks' bond holdings of struggling euro zone nations Greece, Portugal, Ireland, Spain and Italy have trapped Europe in a vicious circle.

The falling value of the debt puts pressure on banks, which in turn weighs on lending and economic activity, making it tougher to sustain the growth that governments badly need to shore up their finances.

European Union leaders have been trying to put a financial "firewall" around the most afflicted nations, but jittery market sentiment suffered a fresh setback on Wednesday when several EU sources told Reuters that the euro zone was considering a delay in parts of a second bailout plan for Greece.

Moody's said that for 99 European financial institutions, the standalone credit assessments have been placed on review for downgrade. For 109 institutions, the long-term debt and deposit ratings have been placed on review for downgrade.

For 66 institutions, the short-term ratings have been placed on review for downgrade.

We revolved the list every year by one month so the same folks failed to get something for Valentine?s Day or St. Patrick?s Day each single year. But it was better when we delivered the gifts ourselves.

During our busy season, we paid a school girl to do all this for us and it worked out well. Also, dependent on how huge an area in which you live, a rather more possible way to supply these could be to split your SOI into sectors where they live instead of by last name. The downbeat with these mortgage changes will be the ?reality check ? factor. Only the credulous will accept that their San Diego home?s worth will snap back shortly. The Northwestern Varsity of Chicago has discovered that as much as one in 4 defaults might have been strategic. Driving this phenomenon is the increasing number of homes that are awfully ?under water,? owing way more than the existing cost of their houses.

'Housewives' confess to real problems

Kim Richards opened up to Andy Cohen on the "Real Housewives" reunion.

By Lia Haberman, E! Online

Viewers might have enjoyed this season of "Real Housewives of Beverly Hills" but at least one 90210 TV set was turned off.

Kim Richards' post-rehab interview with Andy Cohen finally aired last night, and the troubled reality star admitted she couldn't stand seeing herself onscreen.?

(For anyone who missed the real-time headlines or the zillion Bravo promos running on air and online, Kim also admitted she's an alcoholic.)

"I had so much guilt and shame for my behavior ... then I drank to cover the guilt and shame, to make it go away."

It was a somber farewell to season two, and not just for Kim.

Taylor Armstrong details more of her twisted relationship with former husband Russell Armstrong. She claims he bugged her desk, house and car and had her take a polygraph after accusing her of cheating. He also allegedly spied on her and almost drowned her in a friend's pool after overhearing Taylor discuss their problems.

And while she won't respond to Andy's question about her ex being murdered, Taylor does explain why she finally left him -- and it has nothing to do with getting kicked out her circle of Bev Hills friends. "I could have lost my eye," she says of an altercation with Russell.?

"I was living in a very unhealthy environment, and I drug a lot of my friends into (it), and I have a lot of remorse for that."

Dana Wilkey gets to explain why she's such a flashy kiss-up ... after showing off her (bleep)-you heels. We're still wondering exactly who that scribble was directed at.

"I'm two people," she tells Andy. "My mom was poor and my dad was rich." She grew up in Methuen, Mass., where her $25,000 shades are half the median household income. And then moved to New York with her dad where she rubbed shoulders with Manhattan's elite at Nightingale-Bamford prep school.

So maybe her beef is with Lisa Vanderpump. "Your dog wears attire for every event," sniped Dana. Or Adrienne Maloof, who's "got a jet and a casino." Or Brandi Glanville, who she accuses of being a bad guest at game night for poking at Kim and Kyle Richards.

Any which way, it doesn't look like Dana's making the ladies' speed dial list except for Taylor's.

Kim also holds a grudge against Brandi and swears prescription medication was all she took on game night.

She admits she owes the hobbled blonde an apology. "The difference is I owe her one for moving her crutches and she owes me one for basically hurting all the people I love.... One daughter just cried and another one told me you don't know how hard it is to walk down the street."?

But since she's gotten sober, Kim says her kids have come back around, visiting or texting her every night. And while it's also repaired her relationship with Kyle, sobriety hasn't reunited her with boyfriend Ken. Kim's now living in a hotel and hasn't seen him since rehab.?

MORE:?Wait, what? Which "Real Housewives" star says she hooked up with Gerard Butler??

As for Mauricio Umansky,?his relationship with sister-in-law Kim is still in limbo since no formal apology has been offered. And that's not all the?"Housewives" hottie is waiting for. Apparently, he hasn't received one naked fan photo this year.

That might change after tonight's topless montage that includes a quick flash of Mauricio's backside as he's gets ready for a massage.

PHOTOS: Before they were "Housewives"

Ken Todd also believes he's fairly attractive to women -- especially Brandi. "They want me.?And that's why I wouldn't take my shirt off in case she attacked me."

As for?Paul Nassif ... well, surgical consultations are bound to increase for Adrienne's sweet but slightly chubby hubby.

So, was tonight's interview with Kim enough or would you have liked to hear more about her recovery? Are you feeling differently about Dana after hearing about her humble beginnings? And are there any viewers out there hot for anyone but Mauricio? Share your thoughts on our Facebook page.
