Best Tips for Crafting With Trash - Articles :: Networx

undefinedIt's not nice to call someone or something "trashy". After all, trash gets a bad rap. A lot of the things that get thrown away are prime materials for DIY projects. Not that I am giving you unfettered permission to hoard garbage, but I am suggesting that if you need inspiration or materials for a DIY project, you might find it in your recycling or garbage bin. We love creative reuse and upcycling, and over the years we have published tens of articles about ways to reuse trash. These six articles are some favorites.

Top 20 Ways to Reuse Tin Cans: This article taught me how to make a DIY planter out of a tin can, which was one of the best "trash-to-treasure" discoveries for me ever.? Sayward Rebhal, a DIY painter near San Diego and green lifestyle blogger, shared other awesome tips, as well. Highlights are: Use a coffee can with a lid as a DIY bag dispenser; build a wine rack from large tomato cans; use clean empty cans in the kitchen as biscuit cutters or forms for mini cakes; make old-fashioned candle holders.

9 Awesome Uses for Junk Mail: Los Angeles gardener and organic food expert Jordan Laio found nine good ways to craft junk mail into anything but junk. Agricultural uses include folding it to make seedling pots, and shredding it and using it as mulch. Other uses for junk mail are: Craft it into a bookmark; use it to make handmade recycled paper; use it as packing material; and make festive decorations from junk mail.

We Tested It: Alternative Uses for Fast Food Products: For a minute, we had a bona fide comedy writer working for us. He's gone on to work in television, but we can still enjoy his work in the Networx archives. Noah Garfinkel went out looking for ways to turn fast food products into cool crafts. He made a six-pack carrier out of hamburger boxes, a remote-control holder from a fries box, and a handy toilet paper holder from a Happy Meal box. You'll never look at fast food the same way.

8 Uses for Yogurt Containers: Buying a carton of yogurt in a plastic container (especially one with a tight-fitting lid) is like being given a free Tupperware. OK, maybe it is not as good as actual Tupperware, but you get the point. In addition to food storage, you can use yogurt containers as measuring cups, ice pop molds, circle templates, scoops, and pen storage.

How to Repurpose Newspaper Around the House: Did you know that you can make a dining room table pad from newspaper? It's an old-fashioned tip, and this article is chock full of old fashioned tips for crafting with, or just plain reusing, newspaper.

Wicked Awesome Uses for Mason Jars: I am not sure why anyone would throw away a Mason jar, but people do. Mason jars are DIY craft gold. Lanterns, snow globes, hanging storage, and flower vases can all be made from Mason jars, and more.

Green Blog: An Addendum on National Park Cuts

Interior Secretary Ken Salazar offered more details on Monday about how the automatic federal spending cuts set to take effect on Friday would hit national parks. With a budget cut of 5 percent, or $112 million, thousands of National Park Service employees would be furloughed and thousands more seasonal workers would not be hired, he said. That would mean sharply reducing visitor services and access to interpretive centers, campgrounds and hiking trails, he suggested.

Some skeptics have questioned why a 5 percent cut would have such a pronounced impact on park services. Mr. Salazar explained that because the cuts would take place in the middle of the fiscal year, their impact is effectively doubled. Gateway communities to national parks would be devastated, he predicted: Whitefish, Mont., which is adjacent to Glacier National Park, would lose an estimated $1 million per day in revenue.

?Their season opens when Glacier?s road gets plowed,? he said.

Jon Jarvis, the director of the Park Service, estimated that 85 to 90 percent of the parks budget represents fixed costs like permanent staff payroll, maintenance and utilities. The remainder is discretionary, he said, and that ?comes down to the frontline visitor services.?

That includes seasonal workers who staff visitor centers and campgrounds, plow roads for the summer, monitor wildfires and perform search and rescue operations, he said. Such reductions have a cascading effect, he added: without adequate staff to ensure safety, some parks would have to block parts of the backcountry to hikers, campers and other visitors.

Mr. Jarvis cited the Gettysburg National Military Park, for example. This year is the 150th anniversary of the battle, considered by many to have been a turning point in the Civil War, but if the cuts go through, the special educational programs planned for the site will probably be eliminated, he said.

It is a poignant example, he said, of how a small cut can have a significant impact.

AP Newsbreak: Drop in Taliban attacks incorrect

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The U.S.-led military command in Afghanistan incorrectly reported a decline last year in Taliban attacks and is preparing to publish corrected numbers that could undercut its narrative of a Taliban in steep decline.

After finding what they called clerical errors, military officials in Kabul said Tuesday that a 7 percent drop in "enemy initiated attacks" for the period from January through December 2012 reported last month will be corrected to show no change in the number of attacks during that span.

The 7 percent figure had been included in a report posted on the coalition's website until it was removed recently without explanation. After The Associated Press inquired about the missing report, coalition officials said they were correcting the data and would re-publish the report.

"During a quality control check, ISAF recently became aware that some data was incorrectly entered into the database that is used for tracking security-related incidents across Afghanistan," said Jamie Graybeal, a spokesman for the U.S.-led coalition known officially as the International Security Assistance Force, or ISAF.

Graybeal said a subsequent audit determined that portions of the data from unilateral Afghan military operations were "not properly reflected" in the trends ISAF had reported in its monthly updates on security and violence.

"After including this unilateral ANSF (Afghan National Security Force) data into our database, we have determined that there was no change in the total number of EIAs (enemy initiated attacks) from 2011 to 2012," Graybeal said.

"This was a record-keeping error that we recognized and have now corrected," he added.

The coalition defines enemy initiated attacks as attacks by small arms, mortars, rockets and improvised explosive devices, or IEDs. But it does not include IEDs that are found and cleared before they explode.

Trends in Taliban attacks are one yardstick used by ISAF to measure war progress. Others include the state of security in populated areas, the number of coalition and Afghan casualties, the degree to which civilians can move about freely, and the performance of Afghan security forces.

Graybeal said that even though the number of 2012 Taliban attacks was unchanged from 2011, "our assessment of the fundamentals of campaign progress has not changed. The enemy is increasingly separated from the population and the ANSF are currently in the lead for the vast majority of partnered operations."

'Spider Sense' suit trades sight for touch

A student project has resulted in a suit that mimics Spider-Man's famous "spider sense," allowing the wearer to sense obstacles and other people without the benefit of sight. It still has a ways to go, though, so using it to fight crime is not advised.

Victor Mateevisti at the University of Illinois, Chicago decided to investigate whether something like an enhanced sense of one's environment can be created with off-the-shelf sensors and hardware. The answer is: Not quite yet, but we're getting there.

The suit consists of ultrasonic rangefinders placed at various attitudes that feed into a central processor. That processor sends signals to small mechanical arms that put pressure on the body in the general region of the object detected.

The approach is similar to that of the Tacit, a hand-worn "sonar for the blind" that translates distance into pressure, but the SpiderSense suit detects its environment in several directions at once.

So, for example, if a person were to approach someone wearing this suit from behind, the sensor would detect that person when they came in range and pressure would be applied to the user's back. If they came from the left, pressure would be applied on the left.

Experiments with a blindfolded test subject had mixed results. In some situations, such as a simple hallway or open area with pedestrians coming and going, the test subject could accurately detect the direction and distance of obstacles (and even hit them with cardboard throwing stars made for that purpose).

On the other hand, navigating the aisles of the library proved impractical: the narrow corridors and openings didn't produce intelligible information.

Mateevitsi told New Scientist that the goal isn't necessarily a whole suit. A limited version of the system could be used by a bicyclist to be better aware of traffic behind him, for instance.

The results and methodology of the project can be viewed in Mateevitsi's paper (PDF); The findings will also be presented next week at the Augmented Human conference in Stuttgart, Germany.

New Geothermal Data System Could Open Up Clean-Energy Reserves

Geologic data does not come cheap, especially when you are using it to build a multimillion-dollar geothermal power plant. Just ask Susan Petty, president and chief technology officer at AltaRock Energy. Her company is part of a $43.8-million pilot project to tap thermal energy from Oregon's Newberry Volcano. Engineers are injecting water deep underground to fracture superheated rocks and create a geothermal reservoir. Their eventual goal is to recirculate pressurized steam back to the surface to test a new kind of technology called an enhanced geothermal system (EGS). Unlike conventional power plants that rely on near-surface hydrothermal systems like springs and geysers, EGS can draw energy up to depths of three to five kilometers. Over the next 50 years, the U.S. Geological Survey estimates, EGS power plants could produce 100 gigawatts of economically viable geothermal energy, an amount equivalent to about 10 percent of the country's current electrical capacity. Yet geothermal wells need to be drilled in the right place. Without data on the distribution and quantity of geothermal energy in the upper part of the earth's crust or a volcano as a reference point, wells may not produce much energy at all. To date, two to five out of every 10 geothermal wells prospected end up dry. Petty says that, in terms of the available exploration data, the geothermal industry is in the same place oil and gas companies were during the early 1900s. Wells cost between $2 million and $5 million, meaning geothermal investors risk losing millions on poor odds, Petty says. ?The risk involved in geothermal prospecting sets the industry apart from other renewables.? The risky nature of the business could soon change, however. A wealth of geologic data from all 50 states and the Gulf of Mexico has been sitting unused in state and federal filing cabinets for decades. The Arizona Geological Survey is leading a coalition of universities and federal agencies on a nationwide treasure hunt to find and digitize these legacy data in a National Geothermal Data System (NGDS) to eliminate some of the financial risk companies like AltaRock face while prospecting for geothermal resources. Since the project's inception in 2008 under $35-million in grants from the U.S. Department of Energy Geothermal Technologies Office, collaborators have digitized information from over 1.25 million oil and gas, water, and geothermal wells and expect to have as many as three million wells in the system by the end of the year. "It has been a rescue mission," says Roland Horne, director of Stanford University?s geothermal program. Project collaborators have found a wellspring of geothermal exploratory data in basements and old file cabinets. The legacy data come from extensive surveys of geothermal resources that were funded by the states and federal government in the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s. A prime example is a 1975-to-1992 DOE survey of geopressured resources in the Gulf of Mexico. The survey documents data from 16 wells off the coasts of Louisiana and Texas that show geopressured and geothermal energy reserves in the Gulf exceed the energy contained in all the conventional natural gas reserves of the continental U.S. At the time, the geothermal energy could not be profitably commercialized, so the data were filed away and forgotten. Previously, getting ahold of geothermal exploration data depended on whom you knew, says Lee Allison, director of the Arizona Geological Survey. "A lot of this stuff was only available if you knew the people and could say, 'Hey, let me have access to your data,'" Allison says. One of the largest sets of geophysical data in the NGDS was collected and digitized by Southern Methodist University geophysicist David Blackwell and a team of researchers in 2011. They worked under a grant from Google.org to digitize data from 35,000 different locations. Their work shows that geothermal energy can generate three million megawatts of renewable electricity?approximately 10 times the capacity of U.S. coal power plants. The NGDS will also include research from more than 200 projects funded by $300 million in 2009 DOE stimulus funding. "The DOE decided if it is going to spend this money, then the research needs to be accessible to everyone," Petty says. "So, essentially, if you are a private company that takes money from the DOE for geothermal development, you have to feed your surveys and research data back into system." Petty says that AltaRock is getting ready to post its research on the Newberry Volcano pilot project into the data system and that the geophysical, seismic, and research data is worth around $8 million. The AZGS is working with Microsoft Research on visualization tools to make interactive 3D maps of the data. Allison says that the ultimate goal is to capture the full geologic and geophysical profile of geothermal energy reserves across the country. "All of these data will be live and accessible to anyone, using nothing more than a Web browser and open-source software." Exurban residences impact bird communities up to 200 meters away, study finds

Feb. 25, 2013 ? According to a study by the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS), impacts to bird communities from a single rural, "exurban" residence can extend up to 200 meters into the surrounding forest. The study also determined that sensitive bird species such as the hermit thrush and scarlet tanager prefer unbroken forests with no houses. Others, like the blue jay and black-capped chickadee, seem to like having, and often thrive with, human neighbors.

As part of the study, scientists sampled the presence of 20 species of birds both near and far from 30 rural residences in the Adirondack Park. Calculating their occurrence at increasing distances from the residences, they determined that "human-adapted" species are 36 percent more likely to occur near the homes than in the surrounding mixed hardwood-conifer forests, and that "human-sensitive" species were 26 percent less likely. Beyond 200 meters, occupancy rates were similar to the surrounding forest.

The report appears in the current online edition of the Journal of Landscape and Urban Planning. Authors of the study are Drs. Michale Glennon and Heidi Kretser of the Wildlife Conservation Society.

Rural exurban development is residential development existing outside of cities and towns, and is generally characterized by larger lot sizes (5-40 acres or more) and lower density than suburban development. Exurban residences exist within an otherwise unaltered ecosystem.

Exurban homes change the environment by bringing vehicles, noise, lights, pets, people, and food sources into the forest, as well as by physically altering and fragmenting habitat. These changes can have myriad impacts, including altered species behavior and composition, increased human wildlife conflicts, new predator-prey dynamics, and decreased biotic integrity (a measure of how pristine a wildlife community is).

"Adirondackers take great pride in their surroundings and try not to unduly disturb the natural setting in which they live," said WCS Adirondack Program Science Director Michale Glennon. "A key finding of the study is that the ecological footprint of development can be much larger than its physical footprint. We found that even a small home and lawn can change bird communities some 200 meters away, which means more than 30 acres of the surrounding landscape, depending on what types of activities are occurring on the residential property. It is important that we learn how birds and other wildlife react to particular kinds of human activities, and find ways to minimize the negative impacts for wildlife in exurban areas."

The study found that species sensitive to human impacts include the black-throated blue warbler, black-throated green warbler, hairy woodpecker, hermit thrush, ovenbird, scarlet tanager and the winter wren. The presence of some species, like the scarlet tanager, are a good indicator of undisturbed forest health.

WCS Livelihoods and Conservation Coordinator Heidi Kretser said, "Some wildlife species are sensitive to exurban development and are less likely to be found near those residences than adapted species. More sensitive and less common species could ultimately be displaced from the area as a result of this kind of development."

The study was modeled after one conducted in a shrub-oak ecosystem in Colorado where scientists calculated a 180-meter ecological effect zone based on their results. Glennon and Kretser believe that the similar results in two different ecosystem types may indicate that human behaviors associated with exurban homes play a larger role in shaping avian community characteristics nearby than do habitat alterations created by construction and clearing.

While breeding bird communities were used to measure the impacts of exurban development in the study, the authors note that birds can serve as valuable indicators of overall biodiversity.

WCS Adirondack Program Director Zoe Smith said, "The Adirondack Park is one of the last large, intact, wild ecosystems in the northeastern United States, and it is becoming increasingly important as we face global threats like climate change. As we strive to find a healthy balance between conservation and the needs of humans within the park, we need to fully understand the impacts of different development patterns. This research is another step toward that understanding and can help inform decisions on development and land-use in this rural landscape."

Pope, on last Sunday, says following God's wishes

VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - Pope Benedict spoke from his window for the last time on Sunday, telling the faithful packed into St. Peter's Square that the first papal abdication in centuries was God's will and insisting he was not "abandoning" the Church.

Four days before the 85-year-old's often troubled eight-year rule ends, new talk of scandal hit the cardinals who will choose his successor; one of them, a Scottish archbishop, had to deny a media allegation of misconduct with young priests in the 1980s.

With an American cardinal urged not to go to the electoral conclave due to his role in handling sexual abuse cases in the United States, and the Vatican accusing media of running smears to influence the vote, the Church faces a stormy succession.

Benedict, however, defended his shock decision to resign as dictated by his failing health; his address to tens of thousands of well-wishers was met with calls of "Viva il Papa!"

"The Lord is calling me to climb the mountain, to dedicate myself even more to prayer and meditation," the German-born pontiff said in Italian, his voice strong and carrying clearly.

"But this does not mean abandoning the Church. Actually, if God asks this of me, it is precisely because I can continue to serve her with the same dedication and the same love I have shown so far," he said, adding that he would be serving the Church "in a way more in keeping with my age and my strengths".

As he spoke, two of the some 117 cardinals who are due to enter the conclave to choose his successor as leader of the 1.2 billion Roman Catholics next month were mired in controversy.

Britain's top Catholic cleric, Cardinal Keith O'Brien of Edinburgh, rejected allegations published in the Observer newspaper that he had been involved in unspecified inappropriate behavior with other priests in the past.

The paper said O'Brien, known for his outspoken views against homosexuality, had been reported to the Vatican by three priests and a former priest, who said they had come forward to demand O'Brien resign and not take part in the conclave.

"Cardinal O'Brien contests these claims and is taking legal advice," a spokesman for the 74-year-old cardinal said.

He was the second cardinal to be caught up in controversy over his attendance ahead of the conclave, where 117 "princes of the Church" under 80 will elect a new pope from their ranks.

On Saturday, Catholic activists petitioned Cardinal Roger Mahony to recuse himself from the conclave so as not to insult survivors of sexual abuse by priests committed while he was archbishop of Los Angeles.

In that post from 1985 until 2011, Mahony worked to send priests known to be abusers out of state to shield them from law enforcement scrutiny in the 1980s, according to church files unsealed under a U.S. court order last month.

SAINTS AND SINNERS

Benedict's papacy was rocked by scandals over the sex abuse of children by priests in Europe and the United States, most of which preceded his time in office but came to light during it.

His reign also saw Muslim anger after he compared Islam to violence. Jews were upset over his rehabilitation of a Holocaust denier. During a scandal over the Church's business dealings, his butler was convicted of leaking his private papers.

But the minds of those in the crowd in St Peter's Square, some holding banners reading "Thank you Holy Father," were not on scandals, real or potential, but on the Church history unfolding around them.

"It's bittersweet," said Sarah Ennis, 21, a student from Minnesota who studies in Rome. "Bitter because we love our Pope Benedict and hate to see him go, but sweet because he is going for a good reason and we are excited to see the next pope."

Others, however, saw it as a possible harbinger of bad moons for the Church.

"This is an ill wind blowing," said midwife Marina Tacconi.

"It feels like something ugly could happen. I'm 58 years old, I have seen popes come and go. But never one resign.

"I don't see it as a good thing."

The Sunday address was one of Benedict's last appearances as pontiff before the curtain comes down on a problem-ridden pontificate.

On Wednesday, he will hold his last general audience in St. Peter's Square and on Thursday he will meet with cardinals and then fly to the papal summer retreat south of Rome.

The papacy will become vacant at 8 p.m. Rome time (1900 GMT) on Thursday, February 28.

Cardinals will begin meetings the next day to prepare for a secret conclave in the Sistine Chapel.

They have already begun informal consultations by phone and email in the past two weeks since Benedict announced his shock abdication in order to build a profile of the man they think would be best suited to lead the Church through rough seas.

On Monday, the pope is expected to issue slight changes to Church rules governing the conclave so that it could start before March 15, the earliest it can be held under a detailed constitution by his predecessor John Paul.

Some cardinals believe a conclave should start sooner than March 15 in order to reduce the time in which the Church will be without a leader at a time of crisis.

But some in the Church believe that an early conclave would give an unfair advantage to cardinals already in Rome and working in the Curia, the Vatican's central administration, which has been at the centre of accusations of ineptitude that some say led Benedict to step down.

The Vatican appears to be aiming to have a new pope elected by mid-March and then formally installed before Palm Sunday on March 24 so he can preside at Holy Week services leading to Easter.

Benedict and his predecessor, John Paul II, made sure any man awarded a cardinal's red hat was firmly in line with key Catholic doctrine supporting priestly celibacy and Vatican authority and opposing abortion, women priests, gay marriage and other liberal reforms.

Crews search for family who abandoned sinking boat

MONTEREY, Calif. (AP) ? Crews planned to search by sea and air through the night Monday as they ramped up efforts to find a husband, wife and two young children who sent a series of distress calls saying their sailboat was sinking far off the Central California coast and they were fashioning a raft from a cooler and a life ring.

The unidentified family had been sailing a small vessel Sunday west of Monterey Bay, where strong winds, cold water and big swells made for perilous conditions. Forecasters had issued a weekend advisory warning boaters of rough seas in the area.

The group ? which included two children under 8 ? made its first distress call late Sunday afternoon, Coast Guard Lt. Heather Lampert said. Investigators used the boat's radio signal and radar to determine the call came from an area about 60 miles west of Monterey.

The boaters reported that their 29-foot sailboat was taking on water and the electronics were failing.

An hour later, the family members reported they had to abandon the boat and were trying to make a life raft out of a cooler and life-preserver ring, Lampert said. The Coast Guard then lost radio contact.

The agency looked for the family through the night and on Monday, with help from the California Air National Guard.

They planned to continue into Monday night, using lights from aircraft and boats, and other technologies to search the area.

"We will just saturate the search area with as many assets as we can, so we can hopefully rescue them," said Coast Guard Chief Petty Officer Mike Lutz.

The Coast Guard on Monday also released one of the family's recorded distress calls (http://bit.ly/W90cyv ), in hopes that it will lead to new information from the public that could help in the search. So far the agency has received no reports of missing persons in the case.

The agency believes the boat may have been called "Charmblow." In the crackling recording, a man's voice is heard saying, "Coast Guard, Coast Guard, we are abandoning ship. This is the (Charmblow), we are abandoning ship."

The agency has not identified the family, although investigators were able to determine from the broken distress calls that they were a husband and wife, their 4-year-old son and his cousin, Lampert said.

The family's location initially was reported farther north, but Lampert said investigators using the boat's radio signal and radar now believe the call came in west of Monterey Bay, which is about 100 miles south of San Francisco. The boat did not have a working GPS system.

The National Weather Service had issued an advisory throughout the weekend warning boaters of strong winds and rough seas around the San Francisco Bay Area. Water temperatures in the area typically are in the 40s and 50s, making long-term survival difficult.

Mariners "operating smaller vessels should avoid navigating in these conditions," the advisory said.

Calls to harbors in California have failed to locate the boat, and database searches have come up empty too, Lampert said. The Coast Guard was expanding its search to Hawaii, the Seattle area and north into Canada.

PFT: Jets want Holmes to restructure deal

Sharrif Floyd

Florida defensive tackle Sharrif Floyd said last week at the NFL Scouting Combine that he?s ?been getting ready to put on a show here.?

He did just that this morning, running a pair of sub-5.0 second 40s at nearly 300 pounds. The question now becomes, would it qualify as a show he wants to watch?

While Floyd?s ability to rush the passer and his athletic talent will make him a high pick, he raised more than a few eyebrows during his media interviews, when he admitted he wasn?t much of a football fan.

Asked the fairly standard question of which player he modeled his game after, Floyd replied: ?I haven?t really watched the league in a long time. I first started watching it in 2007, but I did get to know Ndamukong Suh in 2010 so we have a good relationship and I?ve watched him play a couple of times.?

That?s right, a possible Top 10 pick in the NFL Draft only started watching football six years ago. And it?s not as if he?s one of the foreign-born players from a land where football wasn?t readily available around the clock. He grew up in Philadelphia, a place where there seems to be some degree of interest in the NFL.

Asked to elaborate on the fact he didn?t watch football until recently, Floyd said ?The first game I ever watched was the Super Bowl when the Colts won it in 2007.?

?It wasn?t that there was no interest, I just didn?t know nothing about it, so there was no reason to watch it,? he continued. ?Even when I started playing there was no?interest in watching it because I liked to play it instead of sitting down and being still and watching a game while all my friends were jumping around and getting excited for no reason.

?It just wasn?t a preference of mine, but now it is so I watch it and play it now.?

Asked what he was watching instead, Floyd talked about the Disney Channel and Cartoon Network.

Don?t get me wrong, as the parent of young children, there?s a good bit of Looney Toons on hand in my home as well. And away from work, I respect people who are well-rounded, and can talk about something other than football.

But a team is about to invest millions of dollars in a man who may or may not like the game he?s about to turn into a career.

We know he?s motivated now, having trained specifically for the Combine to put on the kind of show that would boost his draft stock and make him financially secure.

But how motivated will he be come the dog days of training camp, or a Wednesday practice in November when his team might be out of the playoff hunt?

Will he be watching film of his next opponent, or catching up on That?s So Raven re-runs?

It?s possible to be great at football without being absorbed by it, but it?s probably not the kind of thing you want to admit at a job interview, either.

U.S. Justice, Gulf states crafting BP spill settlement

(Reuters) - The U.S. government and Gulf Coast states are considering offering BP Plc a deal under which it pays $16 billion to settle civil suits stemming from the deadly 2010 Deepwater Horizon explosion and oil spill, the Wall Street Journal reported on Friday.

The deal would cover the company's potential penalties under the Clean Water Act and payments under the Natural Resources Damage Assessment, the newspaper said, citing sources familiar with the discussions.

It was unclear if the deal has been formally offered to BP. The U.S. Justice Department declined to comment.

A settlement could avert a bruising courtroom battle over the worst ever U.S. offshore oil spill slated to start on Monday in New Orleans, although the trial may begin as the terms of the deal are hammered out.

A settlement would also put a solid number on BP's costs under the Clean Water Act, which range from $4.5 billion to $17.5 billion, as well as potential natural resources damage assessments to the states under the Oil Pollution Act.

"BP doesn't talk about possible offers or negotiations, but I can tell you we are ready for trial and looking forward to the opportunity to present our case starting Monday," BP spokesman Geoff Morrell said when contacted by Reuters.

BP has spent or committed $37 billion on cleanup, restoration, payouts, settlements and fines. That includes an estimated $8.5 billion deal with most plaintiffs and a record $4.5 billion in penalties, and a guilty plea to 14 criminal counts to resolve criminal charges from the Justice Department and civil claims from the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.

BP has said it would settle on "reasonable terms," but was prepared to go to trial if the demands were "excessive and not based on reality."

ZTE Grand Memo hands-on: a first look at Qualcomm's Snapdragon 800 in action (video)

ZTE Grand Memo handson a first look at Qualcomm's Snapdragon 800 in action

ZTE caught us by surprise today, outing a Snapdragon 800-infused version of the Grand Memo at its MWC 2013 presser. The device, which still features the same 5.7-inch 720p display, 13-megapixel rear camera and 3,200mAh battery, is nearly indistinguishable from the other variants we've seen. But for this go-round, ZTE's added in Dolby Digital Plus Surround for a superior audio experience and an extra GB of RAM.

Its external chassis may have remained the same -- plasticky and lightweight -- but the difference in this 8.9mm thick Memo's real-world performance is immediately noticeable. OS actions on the skinned Jelly Bean UI don't just zip, they now quite literally fly -- truly, this device is deserving of the long-deceased "beast" moniker. Although international tradeshow WiFi connections are typically dreadful, we did manage to successfully run the Sunspider benchmark to get a quick taste of its rendering performance. The result? The Grand Memo notched a score of 1,186.7ms -- an unimpressive result when contrasted with the Tegra 4's 499ms (as derived from a reference tablet).

As for ZTE's MyFavorite UX layered atop Android 4.1.2, well, we're pleased to say it yields some neat animations. The entire homescreen, including widgets, revolves with a smooth 3D effect that just imbues the handset with a special "feel." It's a shame then that the Memo's encased in a less than premium shell, as it creates a disconnect between the smoking internals and humdrum exterior. But with a newly announced commitment to building its brand (a sentiment popular with Chinese OEMs as of late), this particular Memo is proof positive that ZTE's serious about raising its profile and consumer perception.

You won't be seeing this Grand Memo hit US shores anytime soon -- it's a China and Europe-only affair for now. So while you wait (and hold onto hope), check out our video tour after the break.

Customer Support and Internet Marketing ? Marketing Services for ...

Written by Carmen

customer supportCustomer support is a plus with any company that you do business with. When you are doing Internet business, knowledgeable customer service is even more important. When doing Internet business there is often no face-to-face contact with those who you do business with. Sometimes there may be a face to put with the name because you have seen a photo, but often times that is not the case.

When choosing an Internet marketing company, find out about their customer support. Sometimes receiving poor customer support is because of lack of communication, not lack of customer support. You can make sure you make the most of the customer support available by first knowing what you need and what is important to you. Some questions you can ask yourself:

? How do I prefer contact with my Internet marketer-email, phone, text, IM, fax, or face-to-face? What percentage of each type is acceptable for me?
? Do I like a lot of hands on with lots of involvement or am I happy with turning over the reins and focusing on my own business tasks?
? Am I knowledgeable about Internet marketing or do I need someone to explain what they are doing so I can understand?
? Do I work regular business hours or do I work crazy hours at all times of the day, every day of the week?

Once you know a little bit about the type customer support that matches with you then you can find an Internet company that provides that type of customer support.

Though much has been said against customer support that has been outsourced to other countries, there are some good companies out there with knowledgeable customer service representatives. If it is important to you to have United States based customer service, make that known to your Internet marketing company. They may have someone in the US to take care of your customer support needs.

To make the most of the customer support that is available, it is important to communicate clearly what you need without excessive background. Basically?just get to the point. It doesn?t matter that much how long you have been with the company or how much you spend; you deserve good customer service no matter who you are. You will probably get it by just getting to the point and you will get your answer faster as well so that the problem can be resolved quickly.

Good customer service from you Internet marketing company should include the following:

? Availability-keep it within reason of course and you may need to be a little flexible. If you need constant contact maybe you won?t be able to have someone available via your contact method of choice. For example, you may have to use emails even though you prefer phone contact, to have the availability that you want from customer support.
? Knowledge-the reason customer service is called to begin with is because there is an unresolved issue or a problem. If customer service representatives aren?t knowledgeable, it?ll be a waste of everyone?s time. Of course you will run into an occasional new person or a bad customer service representative, but it doesn?t mean everyone will give you poor service, try calling back.
? Information-even though you don?t want to be stuck with a pushy salesperson, the customer service representative should have information on other services and products that may be of interest to you. You can always politely decline.
? Listens-if your customer support representative doesn?t listen, then it will be more difficult to communicate the problem and get the problem resolved.

Customer support will be the on the front line when it comes to contacting an Internet marketing company, so make sure they will be able to meet your needs.

Karma Snack Internet marketing company knows that customer support is important. They have a knowledgeable, skilled, and experienced team so that your customer care needs will be met. Third straight weekend storm heads towards New England

BOSTON (Reuters) - New England faced it third straight weekend of storms that will dump a messy, extended mix of wet snow and freezing rain across the region, meteorologists said Saturday.

Meanwhile another storm in the West will roll out of the Rocky Mountains this weekend and could create blizzard conditions in Colorado, according to a National Weather Service advisory.

Snow blanketed much of the Midwest earlier this week, with more than a foot in Kansas on Thursday, forcing airports to cancel hundreds of flights and leaving motorists stranded on highways.

Starting on Saturday, New England's coast from northern Connecticut to southern Maine was expected to be pelted with a mix of snow and rain, according to a National Weather Service advisory, while inland areas could see significant snow accumulations.

Wet snow and freezing rain was expected Saturday afternoon through Sunday evening in southern New Hampshire, northern Rhode Island and much of Massachusetts, including the Boston metropolitan area.

Up to a foot of snow was possible in parts of central Massachusetts, National Weather Service meteorologist John Foley said. From 2 to 5 inches of snow may fall in Boston.

The heaviest snowfall was expected Saturday night through Sunday morning, with 1 to 2 inches per hour possible, the weather service said.

Steve Scardino, a software sales executive and lifelong New Englander from Hopkinton, Massachusetts said he wondered what all the fuss was about.

"Look, it's winter, it's New England, it snows. Happens every time!" he said, laughing.

The storm may bring sleet and freezing rain to the Appalachians and mid-Atlantic states, with thunderstorms expected in the Southeast, the weather service said. It likely will dump rain from New York City to Philadelphia, it said.

The storm barreled eastward for the weekend after pummeling the Midwest. In Kansas City, Missouri, Mayor Sly James said about 60 buses were stuck on snowbound streets on Friday, and even tow trucks were immobilized.

"It's still an ongoing process to get people off the roads," he told CNN.

SNOWY KANSAS

Kansas bore the brunt of the bad weather on Thursday, with up to 15 inches of snow in some parts of the state, according to the National Weather Service.

A closed 200-mile (323-km) stretch of Interstate 70 in central Kansas was strewn with cars stuck in snow.

National Guard troops riding in Humvees were dispatched to look for stranded motorists along the interstate and other highways, said Sharon Watson, a spokeswoman for Kansas emergency management services.

The storm triggered severe thunderstorms from eastern Texas to Georgia.

Missouri Governor Jay Nixon and Kansas Governor Sam Brownback declared states of emergency because of hazardous travel and possible power outages..

In Nebraska, a 19-year-old woman was killed in a two-car accident on Wednesday on Interstate 80 near Giltner. The Nebraska State Patrol said weather was a factor.

An 18-year-old man died in Oklahoma when his vehicle slid into a tractor-trailer on a slushy state highway, the state's highway patrol said.

Drought-stricken farmers in the Great Plains, one of the world's largest wheat-growing areas, welcomed the moisture, although experts said more rain or snow would be needed to ensure healthy crops.

Meanwhile, in the Southeast, a "rich supply of Gulf moisture" will drive heavy rainfall from the Florida Panhandle east to the Carolinas on Saturday, the National Weather Service advisory said.

Cuba's Raul Castro raises possibility of retiring

HAVANA (AP) ? Cuban President Raul Castro has unexpectedly raised the possibility of leaving his post, saying Friday that he is old and has a right to retire. But he did not say when he might do so or if such a move was imminent.

The Cuban leader is scheduled to be named by parliament to a new five-year term Sunday, and Castro urged reporters to listen to his speech that day.

"I am going to resign," Castro said at a joint appearance with visiting Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev, an enigmatic smile on his face. It was not clear whether he was joking.

"I am going to be 82 years old," Castro added. "I have the right to retire, don't you think?"

When reporters continued to shout questions about his plans for the next five years, Castro replied: "Why are you so incredulous?"

He said to listen carefully on Sunday.

"It will be an interesting speech," he said. "Pay attention."

Castro's tone was light and his comments came in informal remarks at a mausoleum dedicated to soldiers from the former Soviet Union who have died around the world.

The Cuban leader has spoken before of his desire to implement a two-term limit for all Cuban government positions, including the presidency. He has also alluded to the limited time he has left to overhaul the island's weak Marxist economy.

That has led many to speculate that this upcoming term would be his last, though term limits have never been codified into Cuban law.

In Washington, State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland had no comment on Castro's remarks.

Most Havana residents had not heard about the comments, which were not shown on Cuban television, although other footage from his appearance with Medvedev was shown. Many reacted with skepticism.

"Who would they put in?" asked Marta Alvarez, a 45-year-old housewife walking through Old Havana. "But I don't think it would be now. It would happen in five years."

Castro will be 86 when his next term ends in 2018. Up until now, all eyes had been on who would emerge as Castro's first and second vice presidents during Sunday's proceedings. The positions are currently occupied by two loyal octogenarians who fought in the 1959 revolution.

Putting someone younger in one of those roles would be the first sign that Castro was settling on a potential next-generation successor, something he and his brother Fidel have never done, even as many comrades have succumbed to old age.

As far back as December 2010, Castro began to reflect on his responsibility, and that of his aging generation, to right Cuba's economy, noting that the actuarial tables leave them few remaining years.

"The time we have left is short, the task is enormous," he told lawmakers in his year-end speech that year. "I think we have an obligation ... to set (the country) on the right course."

When Raul Castro does leave the political stage, it would end more than a half century of unbroken rule by the two brothers, who came to power in 1959 at the head of a revolution against U.S.-backed strongman Fulgencio Batista.

Armando Gutierrez, a 78-year-old Cuban-American lawyer in Florida and veteran of the failed 1961 Bay of Pigs invasion, said he hoped Castro wasn't joking about retiring, but doubted that whoever follows would bring true political change.

"Can you imagine 54 years?" Gutierrez said. "Not even the Roman emperors lasted that long."

Relations with the United States have been sour since shortly after the revolution. One of the key provisions of the 51-year U.S. economic embargo on Cuba stipulates that it cannot be lifted while either of the Castros is in power.

Castro has implemented a series of economic and social reforms since taking over from his ailing brother in 2006, but the island is still ruled by one party. Fidel Castro is 86 and retired, and has seemed increasingly frail in recent appearances.

The elder Castro was also visited by Medvedev, Cuban state-run media reported. Communist Party newspaper Granma reported that the two countries signed an agreement on restructuring more than $20 billion in Soviet-era debt Cuba owes.

The terms of the restructuring weren't announced. The debt has been a point of contention between Cuba and Russia for years. It was originally built up in rubles to pay the Soviet Union for services provided in the 1980s, and Cuba has questioned how much it should be worth today.

iPhone game controller | Control iPhone NES games

An iPhone game controller can theoretically allow you to control iPhone games without touching the iPhone display. The concept is strange as we see many ways to use the iPhone to control other devices.

Connect a wii remote to your iPhone and control Nintendo NES games with nes4iphone, iPhone nes emulatorFor example, you can use your iPhone to control your computer , your home stereo , your TV , and even use the iPhone as a wireless controller to control PC games.

Have you thought of using an external game controller to control a game on the iPhone? This might sound strange at first glance. Why would you want to control games using an external iPhone game controller as the iPhone itself is a controlling device with its built in accelerometer and touch screen.

This might be true for some games where the touch control is really the way to go. But some games do require some buttons to fully enjoy the game play and without hiding parts of the screen with your fingers while playing.

?

Zeemote iPhone game controllerThere are two types of iPhone game controllers. The first type is a native game controller that would allow you to control games designed specially for the iPhone.

The game must be compatible with the controller in order for this to work. Therefore, developers must support the controller device. And the iPhone game controller must release an SDK (Software Development Kit) for the developers.

iControlPad is an iPhone game controller for playing classic games on the iPhoneThe other type of iPhone game controller requires jailbreaking your iPhone and is designed for classic games running using an iPhone emulator.

You have to jailbreak iPhone to run those emulators. This type of iPhone game controller use the basic Nintendo or Sega controls to give full control similar to the original controls.

nes4iphone which is an iPhone nes emulator allows you to use a Wii Remote to control Nintendo NES games.

?

iPhone Native Controllers:

This area is still under development, but is slowly coming to life. It will become live when Apple implement some changes in the iPhone OS which will allow for such controllers to be developed easily. It seems that Apple wants to do this correctly themselves, and not by others. Therefore, there is no support from Apple in this area for other companies.

The iPhone is a touch screen device and Apple doesn't like the idea of eliminating the accelerometer and the touch screen to play games the old way which requires buttons. For this to be smooth, support from Apple is required.

There are many concepts in the horizon. All those concepts add some buttons and a D-Pad to the iPhone. they plug to the 30-pin connector at the bottom of the iPhone and work as an iPhone case giving the iPhone a PSP style control. Some concepts have a rechargeable battery to give additional battery to the iPhone.

JoyPod (Concepts): The name is Kotaku which is another concept from Belkin shown on the left.

The GameBone is made by an Australian company called 22Moo. It is the most promising product for the iPhone with an 8 button D-Pad, and 6 buttons. It can connect to the iPhone 30-pin dock and is built in battery to give more juice to the iPhone while playing.

GameBone Pro will also introduce a clipping option to attach the iPhone to the controller so you can play and hold the iPhone at the same time.

?

Zeemote iPhone game controllerThe Zeemote is not officially supported for the iPhone. The video below shows an iPhone using the Zeemote. The company is planning to support the iPhone in the near future.

?

iPhone Classic Games Controller:

The WiiMote is the Nintendo Wii game controller which is a bluetooth device. With installing some iPhone hacks your iPhone bluetooth can communicate with the Wii Remote. Install BTstack from Cydia and run iPhone nes emulator that supports the wii remote like nes4iphone, and you can control your Nintendo NES games from the Wii Remote on your iPhone.

Control Nintendo NES games with a Wii Remote by running nes4iphone an iPhone nes emulator

Additionally, you can connect your iPhone to your TV through an iPhone video out cable and start playing NES games on your TV and control the games with the Wii Remote.

iControlPad: This is a concept designed for jailbreakers running iPhone emulators and classic games from Nintendo , Sega and Play Station. Watch the video below:

This way you can play the game the way it was intended to be played.

Apple still doesn't like this type of iPhone game controller as this would encourage people to jailbreak and run iPhone emulators to run those classic games.

?

iPhone grip & steering wheel:

Game controller grip is a simple type of iPhone game controller. it doesn't really add any functions or features to the game or to the device. It is a simple iPhone holder that give you a good grip so that you can control the game better. It allows for improved use of the accelerometer, and gives more room on the iPhone screen to touch and control the iPhone games.

Get a grip is an iPhone game controller that holds the iPhone and allows for good gripihandstick iPhone game grip controller

iPhone game controller as a steering wheelThe iPhone steering wheel is another idea for controlling car racing games.

You simply mount the iPhone in a slot inside a steering wheel and then use the iPhone accelerometer to turn just like holding a real car steering wheel.

Play Classic Games on External TV:

Having an external game controller or joystick would need the iPhone to be held far away. For example, you would need an iPhone stand to hold the iPhone while you hold the game controller from a distance to play the game which is not very convenient.

Imagine being able to connect your iPhone to your TV, and then run a classic iPhone game on the TV and use an external game controller to control the game. With some iPhone bluetooth hacks, you can connect a wii remote to the iPhone and control many old classic games with the WiiMote.

All iPhone nes emulator support iPhone bluetooth connectivity to the WiiMote which is really cool. The iPhone can become a portable game console when connected to the TV.

Almost all iPhone emulators allow you to use the iPhone bluetooth to connect external bluetooth game controllers. You can then play games designed for other game consoles like Nintendo NES, GameBoy, Sega Genesis and others . A bluetooth iPhone game controller is an amazing addition to fully enjoy those classic games when displayed on a big screen TV.
