Hyundai Elantra, Range Rover Evoque Named North American Car and Truck of the Year

January 9, 2012 4:30 PM Text Size: A . A . A Every year since 1994, the Detroit Auto Show has kicked off with a big announcement: the North American Car and Truck of the Year reveal. During the previous 12 months, a panel of 50 independent automotive journalists (including two from PM) drive and evaluate all the new cars and trucks.

In late November, the jurors voted and the highest scoring three cars and trucks are singled out as finalists. This year, the car finalists included the Ford Focus, Hyundai Elantra, and the VW Passat while the trucks included the BMW X3, the Honda CR-V, and the Range Rover Evoque. Another round of voting ensues with the final results compiled by Deloitte Consulting. Only one person, the vote counter at Deloitte, knows the winner before the show opening.

Our money would have been on the Ford Focus and the Honda CR-V. But it?s a good thing we?re not the betting type: The Hyundai Elantra was named the 2012 North American Car of the Year and the Range Rover Evoque nabbed the truck honors.

Although we would?ve lost our bet, both are great cars. The Elantra is one of our 11 favorite non-hybrid fuel-sippers, getting 29/40 EPA fuel economy. And check out our test drive of the 2012 Evoque.
