One of the most popular gaming devices available on the market these days is the Nintendo DS and improvements have seen us with the DSi and now the 3DS with its innovative technology. With this improvement in technology, we have seen a huge increase in the amount of people taking advantage of home brew games.
There have been for years cartridges that allow the user to use their own Kernel or a Kernel that has been designed to avoid certain security features of the handheld that Nintendo had put in place. The reason these Kernels have been used is that they allow users to play movies and other media files from an SD card and this technology has been expanded to work with the 3DS.
Nintendo are not happy about the use of these Kernels to bypass the security put in place in their units but one thing they must be happy about is the fact that these Kernels are giving the actual handheld units a wider appeal.
Of course there are a number of people out there whose sole intention is to use the Kernels to allow the playing of pirated games which ultimately damages the industry.
Overall though the introduction of new features enhances Nintendo?s appeal and because developers are able to code home brew games then it ensures that there will continue to be a growing need for the 3DS as more and more software is written. It might even be the case that Nintendo are allowing their devices to be coded because surely there must be a way to prevent users using these alternative Kernels.
Whatever the use the 3DS is put to it is destined to make its mark in history and could even overshadow its stable mates. Because Nintendo have invested so much in the DS and have added so many new features, we can be sure that they will play a major role in the 3D market for quite some time to come.
