GOP's final night is about telling Romney's story

(AP) ? When Mitt Romney addresses the Republican convention Thursday night, he'll do it from a stage that puts him a little bit closer to the crowd inside the convention hall. His campaign hopes the evening ends with Americans feeling a little bit closer to the Republican presidential candidate, too.

On this night, they are telling Romney's story.

The entire evening ? from the physical staging to the speakers' program to the planned whole-family entrance after Romney's big speech ? is aimed at introducing the sometimes stiff and distant politician as a businessman, Olympic savior and deeply religious family man. His pitch to his party, as well as to the many undecided voters who are disappointed in the country's direction, will be that he's the candidate better able to shoulder the country's economic burdens.

"It will be my privilege to stand at the podium to accept the nomination," Romney wrote in an email to supporters Thursday morning. "And I will stand not just for every supporter, and not just for the Republican Party ? I'll stand for every American who believes our best days are ahead."

Romney's speech is the centerpiece of the evening, and will touch on themes that are both personal and political. He'll tell stories, aides say, that haven't been part of his campaign trail pitch. He'll discuss his Mormon faith, particularly his time helping struggling families when he served as a church leader in Boston. He'll also present what advisers described as a "clear vision" of a Romney presidency.

"I commit to you that I will be the president this moment demands," Romney wrote.

To prepare for the big night, Romney has spent months making meticulous notes about his experiences campaigning. He's read numerous previous convention speeches and talked to a number of close friends and confidants about how to approach his address. He and his wife, Ann, spent part of last weekend rehearsing their speeches in an auditorium at Brewster Academy in Wolfeboro, N.H., near the family's lakeside summer home.

When the big moment comes, he'll be standing in the Tampa Bay Times Forum on a stage that organizers rebuilt overnight. They replaced what had been a standard stage at the front of the hall with a section that pushes the podium toward the center of the floor, so Romney will physically stand among the crowd as he speaks.

"It brings him a little bit closer," campaign manager Matt Rhoades said of the new arrangement.

Before Romney speaks, a parade of people from his past will take to the podium to walk through different phases of his life: his time running the private equity firm Bain Capital, his years running the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City and his experiences as governor of Massachusetts. Referred to inside the campaign as "character witnesses," the speeches are designed to showcase the man who friends say inspires fierce loyalty. Much of the list was drawn up by Romney's son Tagg, who found acquaintances from their Mormon church in Massachusetts to talk about how his father helped them get by.

Among those set to address the crowd are Bob White, a longtime friend and colleague from Bain Capital, and Tom Stemberg, the founder of Staples, the office supply store; Olympic speed skater Derek Parra and hockey player Mike Eruzione; and former Massachusetts Lt. Gov. Kerry Healey, who is still a closer adviser.

Shortly before 10 p.m. Eastern time, organizers will run a film showcasing Romney's life. A handful of young video staffers have spent weeks working 16-hour days inside a suite at the Marriott hotel where Romney is now staying, editing the piece through the wee hours of the morning.

Then, it will be Romney's turn. When the speech is over, he'll walk back up the stage to where his entire family ? wife, five sons and their wives, and 15 of his 18 grandchildren ? will be waiting. Thousands of balloons nestled in netting high above the convention floor will drop, carefully positioned so that none fall on the family.

It will create the image his campaign is looking for. At that Marriott hotel the morning of the speech, Rhoades saw a copy of Thursday's Tampa Bay Times, where, on the front page, running mate Paul Ryan and his family are pictured waving after his Wednesday night address, the vice presidential nominee's arm wrapped around the waist of his wife, Janna.

Rhoades pointed at the photo.

"We need that," he said.

Small Business Advice : Buying A Business | Stuff.co.nz

I'm looking at buying a business. What are the risks I should be aware of before I take the plunge?

A: Key commercial risks to identify, and ensure you can mitigate, during due diligence are operational and financial.

Operational risks cover the company's physical assets; are they in good condition, fit for purpose and provide capacity for future growth?

Risks that you should evaluate include people and culture (qualifications and experience, relationships with key suppliers and customers, commitment if a new owner comes in); legal (contractual or legislative risks may be present); suppliers (certainty of supply and strength of relationship); customer diversification (is the business over-reliant on any group of customers?); and product diversification (how much revenue (and more importantly profit) is derived from the goods or services that are being sold?)

Financial risks to consider include evaluating the proposed capital structure of the business following your purchase (mix of debt and equity), substantiating the historical financial records you have been provided with, reviewing forward workloads, completion of an integrated Profit & Loss, Balance Sheet and Cash Flow forecast.

Also consider whether there is there any exposure to foreign exchange or commodity price fluctuations or interest rate risk.

Finally, review the business' historical and forecasted liquidity and credit (debtors and their payment history, management of cash flow and appropriate working capital facility in place).

Other key risks to evaluate include shareholders; effectiveness of governance/advisory support; competition (who, what are their points of difference and is it likely to change?), and systems (are IT and other systems in place to provide you with reliable information which you can make good decisions?).

With so much to review carefully prior to purchasing a business, I recommend making a thorough list prior to commencing due diligence. ?

Use the expertise of a suitably experienced chartered accountant or adviser to help you undertake an appropriate level of risk analysis.

And, remember, that as well as risk, you should be looking for opportunities to grow the business and add value to the shareholders.

Steven Stark is a partner of BDO Waikato.

A: No 1: Check out whether there are any existing issues with staff, customers, suppliers and the IRD.

Take your time to investigate what you are buying and whether you can build the business and sell it for more in a few years time. Does this business generate shareholder wealth or are you simply buying a lousy job?

Challenge future revenue forecasts, what facts do they have to back these projections up with?

What are you buying? Would it be better to start a similar business from scratch?? Most business owners over value their business.

Always ask yourself if I set up in operation over the road from this business how easily could I just acquire their customers by providing better service or product offering?

If you are acquiring a customer base - investigate whether their loyalty is it to the business or the current business owner and staff. What value is going to walk out the door with existing owners?

Romney to feature personal side at convention

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) ? Mitt Romney is about to get personal.

The GOP's presidential nominee-to-be wants to use his four-day party next week in Florida to play up his life story.

It will follow a summer filled with a barrage of TV ads that cast him as a ruthless and out-of-touch businessman. Those were courtesy of President Barack Obama and his allies.

So Romney will surround himself with his five sons, five daughters-in-law and 15 of his 18 grandchildren. Romney's wife, Ann, will play her biggest role yet. A parade of athletes Romney met as an Olympic organizer, such as hockey legend Mike Eruzione, will be on hand. So will doting parishioners he helped as a lay pastor in the Mormon Church in Boston.

Networking and Sales: Securing Leads From Existing Customers

?

Though maintaining an existing relationship is often one of the more important considerations for people who are in sales jobs, there are ways that they can use their clients to generate more business and help them find new leads.

Relationships are everything in sales, and a representative needs to be taught the correct way to extract information from their existing clients that could potentially help to lead to new business opportunities.

A sales management team needs to sit down with employees and explain exactly what goes into networking with existing clients, as this is often an area that can be rife with potential to ruin an already developed relationship. At the same time, representatives need to see each buyer as a way to find new business.

A sales management team should teach their employees to use their relationships with clients as a leveraging point for obtaining leads and referrals for new business in a manner that is both respectful and slightly timid. Because of the implications of this move, a manager needs to hammer home the fact that reps need to tread lightly in these situations.

Having a reference from a fellow professional is one of the easier ways to bypass the formalities that exist between salespeople and customers, as reps can be let in the back door and placed right in front of a buyer.

If the buyer is able to give a reference to another company within the same vertical or sector, the rep could have an easy in to another firm that will generate significant revenue for the sales operation.

By creating a partnership with a trustworthy individual in a given market, a representative may be able to cement their place among salespeople in the industry as one of the go-to people.

There are also relationships that exist between salespeople in different industries, and these individuals may both have leads that will help the other person's business.

Mutually beneficial relationships are usually rare in sales, but when they do exist, both parties can see dramatic increases in the viability of their leads. Bridging the client-representative gap is one of the biggest challenges facing salespeople, and any help to get around this obstacle is welcomed.

Reps need to be taught how to find people who are serious about these types of relationships and are relatively exclusive in their area. This way they can establish and provide complementary services or products in a mutually beneficial way. A high level of trust is required, but that core synergy is going to be one of the strongest referral opportunities that you're going to get and reps should learn to not pass up these chances.

No matter how much a representative may trust another person, there needs to be demonstrated value on the part of both participants, or someone may begin to take advantage of the situation. Asking for a referral should only be done by an individual that has earned the right to ask another industry rep, as the relationship is based on both people bringing something substantial to the table.

Reps also have to be wary as to the type of business that they are given a referral to, as there are companies that operate in different manners based on the industry they are in or the size of their operation.

If the referral is to a small business, the owner could be extremely busy and will be upset with receiving a sales call that they aren't expecting. This type of correspondence could erase any chance of securing their business, regardless of the referral.?

Email Marketing ? Are Your List Building Attempts Paying Off ...

A familiar phrase often heard in internet marketing circles is that the money is in the list. Long gone are the days when receiving email was something new; today people are usually signed up to numerous email lists.

Take a look at what writes http://www.nicecritic.com/forex-profit-model/. Web marketers who have built huge lists over a period of years could possibly become successful without expending a lot of effort. Then again, if you are a beginning online marketer or simply desire to be more profitable with your email marketing, you must follow the trends that work in the current marketplace.

If you want to attain long-term success, you are going to need to think of your email list as more than simply a source of fast profits. Most probably you are subscribed to multiple lists. Think about which emails you enjoy reading and those which you would never read. What are the reasons that you decide that specific emails are always worth opening and reading? Is it because you trust the person and believe that he can be trusted?

Communicating and creating relationships with your customers is possible in lots of ways. If you understand the way that social networking has altered the way people act and recommendations online, you can make use of this to better your mailing list building techniques. In lots of ways, this is a two-way type of virally ramping up your reputation on the Web.

If you have pages and accounts at the big social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter and if a lot of people like and follow you, you are going to be able to get people subscribing to your mailing list. Equally, if you send people from your email list and your web sites to your social network pages where you can publish valuable content, this will as well produce a viral effect. This kind of relationship marketing is one of the most effective ways to build a genuinely responsive email list. Even though intriguing, the only open rate that is applicable is yours. If you put in that initial effort and keep working from the position of giving client value, your emails are going to be opened. Do not fall into the trap of just mailing sales pitch after sales pitch and sending swipe messages that other list owners using. So follow the guidelines here and you can expect to build a lucrative business by using the power of a responsive mailing list.

She might have returned to reporter's mindset, but the three-day Puerta Vallarta bash is still fresh in her thoughts as well as the thoughts of the 50 friends that joined her and Gene Wu at Villa Verano for the poolside wedding.

We love that she wore a gown designed for her by close friend?Chloe Dao and that he wore linen slacks and shirt, shirttail out and sandals (as did all the groomsmen).?The bridesmaids wore tangerine-colored gowns also designed by the Project Runway star. "The boys had it easy . . . I just went to Macy's," Miya emailed.

In the wedding party ?Whet Smith, Jason Luong, Kim Padgett, Stephen Louis, Courtney Zubowski, Toby Hamrick, Jessica Rossman, Windy Hamrick, Jeff Shell and Laurette Veres.

The non-denominational commitment ceremony (they wrote their own vows) was performed by LyAnna Smith, a United Methodist seminarian and long-time friend of the groom. The previous week, the couple were officially wed by U.S. District Judge David Hittner?in his courtroom in the Bob Casey Federal Courthouse.

For Gene, it's back to the business of running for State Representative.

A NY Knicks bash

In town to beef up his game under tutelage of Basketball Hall of Famer?Hakeem Olajuwon?at the Big Man Camp, New York Knicks forward Amar'e Stoudemire took time out from the court play to help celebrate Amar'e Jr.'s birthday at the Houston Texans Grille.

In honor of the 6-year-old, the Grille had a special birthday cake made and decorated the private room in a Texans theme complete with beads, hats, noisemakers and balloons. Never mind that adults outnumbered the kids by a long shot. The eatery surprised young Amar'e with his own kid-sized Houston Texans helmet and jersey.

Sight 'ems

Contemporary Arts Museum Houston director Bill Arning lunching with CAMH board chair Sissy Kempner at Brasserie 19 where the midday crowd included Joyce Echols, Lora Clemmons, Elizabeth Petersen, Erin Florescu, Irene Robertson, Ghyda Midani?and loads more . . .

A clear sign that summer travels are shutting down: Alan Crain, Bill Wright, David Solomon, Hiram Butler, Dancie Ware, David Wuthrich and so many others in the business crowd lunching at La Griglia . . .

Tod Eason and pals celebrating his birthday at the Foundation Room at House of Blues, where the group grooved to the sounds of MTA: A Tribute to Metallica? and?THAT 80z BAND, which with its ribald '80s-hair rock tribute just screamed TOD EASON!? Joining in the retro wild fun were Lonnie Schiller, Nick Florescu, the newly hitched Jillian and Andrew Seerden, Andrew Rentz, Jason Reeves, Matt Moriarty, Fleming's GM and all-around-cool-guy Sam Governale and Dean Giuffre . . .

Bill Boyar, founder of boutique law firm BoyarMiller, with the firm's chairman, Chris Hanslik at the Tasting Room-Uptown Park where they presented SEARCH Homeless Services executive director, Thao Costis with a big surprise of dozens of pairs of shoes!

Back in July, BoyarMiller and the Tasting Room co-hosted a fundraising drive for school uniforms for SEARCH, which raised $28,000. To ensure that the SEARCH kids had new shoes along with their new clothes, Bill and Chris chipped in extra funds to buy shoes.

Stocks up slightly on strong retail results - KTTC Rochester, Austin ...

By By JOSHUA FREED
AP Business Writer

Stocks resembled summer vacationers on Friday, rising not-too-impressively in the morning and then mostly laying around for the rest of the day.

Positive news from retailers was the main reason U.S. indexes posted small gains. Apple helped too by hitting a new high.

Traders in both the U.S. and Europe are on vacation, so volumes were low. And the dog days continued for Facebook. A 4 percent decline left it shares at about half the price of its May initial public offering.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 25.09 points to close at 13,275.20. The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 2.65 points to close at 1,418.16. The Nasdaq rose 14.20 points to close at 3,076.59.

The modest gains put some indexes close to their highs for the year. The Dow is now within four points of 13,279, its high for the year set on May 1. The S&P 500 is within one point of its four-year high set on April 1.

The Dow has now risen eight out of the last 11 days and finished the week up a half-percent. The Dow is sporting a gain for the year of almost 8.7 percent for the year, while the S&P 500 is up almost 12.7 percent.

Next week is likely to be more eventful. Investors will get Chinese housing reports, minutes from a closely-watched Federal Reserve meeting, and jobless claims. And Europe's problems, which were mostly off center stage in recent days, return front-and-center as German Chancellor Angela Merkel meets in Berlin with Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras to talk about progress in overcoming Greece's debt crisis.

"Next week, you have somebody say something that no one expects, in thin trading it could really move markets around," said John Canally, investment strategist at LPL Financial.

Strong retail earnings and outlooks drove Friday's gains. Gap Inc. shares rose 4.8 percent after it boosted its outlook and posted a 29 percent jump in net income. That suggests the operator of Gap, Old Navy and Banana Republic stores is finally on the way to a turnaround.

Shares of Ann Inc., the parent of retailer Ann Taylor, jumped 20 percent after its second-quarter profit rose 24 percent. Foot Locker rose 1.7 percent after quarterly profits leaped 59 percent, boosted by higher sales, cost controls and a small tax-related gain.

A few retailers did struggle. Sears Holdings Corp. fell 1.3 percent, giving back some of Thursday's big gain.

Expectations for retailers were low, but they beat them, said Lawrence Creatura, portfolio manager at Federated Investors.

"Nobody going into the summer expected a vibrant consumer, so expectations were muted," he said.

Technology stocks saw both highs and lows on Friday.

Apple hit an all-time high, rising almost 2 percent to $648.11. It now has a market value of about $608 billion, almost 50 percent higher than No. 2 Exxon Mobil Corp. at $408 billion.

But declines continued for Facebook and Groupon, the online coupon company.

Facebook closed at $19, about half the value of its initial public offering price of $38. Investors are worried that mobile ads won't bring in as much money as those seen on desktop computers. And Facebook's short-term problems include the expiration of a lock-up period on Thursday that had kept early investors from selling.

Groupon lost another 5 percent to close at $4.75. It has now set a new low every day since Tuesday. Its woes include foreign-exchange rates in Europe and a worry that its business isn't very hard for competitors to copy.

Health care stocks declined a half-percent, the biggest drop among the 10 industry groups in the S&P 500. Pharmaceutical companies led the decline. Pfizer fell 1 percent, and Merck dropped 1.4 percent.

Computer chip maker Marvell Technology Group Ltd. stock dropped 14 percent after a revenue decline sliced its quarterly net income by more than half. Its CEO cited a slowing economy for the trouble.

Global markets edged higher after German Chancellor Angela Merkel gave a new pledge of support for the euro. On Thursday she said that "we feel committed to do everything we can to maintain the common currency." Germany is Europe's economic powerhouse, so its support is critical to the euro's survival. The German DAX rose 0.6 percent.

Wildfire arsonist guilty of 5 heart attack deaths

(AP) ? A jury on Wednesday found a California man guilty of murdering five people who had heart attacks after he deliberately started a blaze that ballooned into a massive wildfire.

Jurors in San Bernardino found 30-year-old Rickie Fowler guilty of setting the Old Fire in the foothills above San Bernardino in October 2003 that burned 91,000 acres and torched 1,000 buildings over nine days.

Prosecutors charged Fowler with the murders of five men, ranging in age from 54 to 93, who died from heart attacks after their homes burned to the ground or as they rushed to evacuate. Fowler also was convicted of two counts of arson, along with special circumstances that make him eligible for the death penalty.

That phase of the proceedings is scheduled to begin Monday.

Fowler became a suspect when witnesses reported seeing a passenger in a white van tossing burning objects into dry brush. Investigators acting on a tip interviewed Fowler several months later but didn't have enough evidence to file charges until six years after the fire, when Fowler was in jail on a burglary conviction.

The charges against Fowler signaled a tough new standard for arson cases in a region plagued by wildfires that sometimes claim the lives of firefighters and civilians. Prosecutors declined to discuss the reasons for pursuing murder charges except to say that if someone is killed during a felony, a person involved in that crime would be responsible for the death.

Some who lost their homes in the fire said Fowler ruined hundreds of lives.

"The people who died were the worst of it, but then there was half a town gone," Kevin Ryan, who lost his home in Cedar Glen and now lives in Crestline, told the Riverside Press-Enterprise. "It was something I wouldn't wish on anybody, that kind of loss."

Tom Wayman, who lost his own Cedar Glen home, felt compelled to attend the trial.

"It affected me so deeply that I wanted to at least observe the process intended to serve justice, just to see what would happen and to see the accused, Rickie Fowler," Wayman told the San Bernardino Sun. "I wanted to look him in the eye."

Prosecutors said Fowler was angry after a man who had given shelter to his family kicked Fowler out of the home, citing thefts and mistreatment. In closing arguments, supervising deputy district attorney Robert Bulloch called Fowler evil and said he knew details about how the fire began that were not revealed to the public.

Defense attorney Donald Jordan argued that prosecutors focused on Fowler to the exclusion of other evidence and pointed out witness discrepancies about the model and color of the van seen where the fire started.

Prosecutors said Fowler gave authorities a note in 2008 acknowledging he was there when the fire began and had intended to light it but a friend beat him to it. The blaze was one of about a dozen that caused widespread damage throughout Southern California during that month.

Fowler denied in jailhouse interviews in 2009 that he tossed a lit road flare from a van to spark the blaze and said he was badgered into making a confession.

The suspected driver of the van, Martin Valdez Jr., was later shot and killed in an unrelated incident.

While awaiting trial, Fowler was convicted of sodomizing a jail inmate and sentenced to three terms of 25 years to life in prison.

Veteran Lampard to lead out youthful England

England manager Roy Hodgson is hoping some of Frank Lampard's experience will rub off on his young squad after naming the Chelsea midfielder as captain for Wednesday's friendly clash here against Italy.

Hodgson has left many of his established stars, including Wayne Rooney and Euro 2012 skipper Steven Gerrard, at home for a match that is being held just three days before the Premier League seasons gets underway.

But Lampard, who was forced to watch England's Euro 2012 quarter-final penalty shoot-out exit to the Italians while on holiday in the south of France because of a thigh injury, is seen by Hodgson as the perfect man to lead an experimental team as the focus turns towards qualifying for the 2014 World Cup.

"I missed him, of course, during the Euros. When you've got players of Frank Lampard's quality, it's a great pity that they get injured," Hodgson said.

Lampard, who has scored 23 goals and will win his 91st cap for England, is not the only familiar face making his comeback, with Manchester United's Michael Carrick also stepping back into the fray after choosing not to go to Euro 2012.

Hodgson added: "Luckily he has reconsidered his decision and he's keen to play for us, so I've got another quality player coming back that I didn't have during Euro 2012."

As disappointing as missing the European Championship was for Lampard, the chance to take a proper break after helping Chelsea finally get their hands on the Champions League has left him fresh and raring to go for the season ahead.

"It was disappointing to get injured obviously but I've had a great break of a month to five weeks which I've never had before," the 34-year-old said.

"I was actually away with my family in the south of France so we watched the game (the quarter-final defeat to Italy) out there.

"It was frustrating because I really fancied us in that game, even when it went to penalties."

With the Euros now out of the way, Hodgson knows that he will be properly judged on how his team performs in the run-up to the World Cup in Brazil where they are in Group H with Poland, Ukraine, Montenegro, Moldova and San Marino.

A new generation of players is coming through, and Lampard says he is pleased to still be in Hodgson's thoughts, even if he will be 36 by the time the World Cup comes round.

"I'm pleased that I'm still in his plans, and if I can be at a level where I deserve to be in the squad then I want to be here."

Questions have been asked about the benefit of staging such a game at this time of year, but with an opening World Cup qualifier to come in Moldova on September 7, Lampard insists that there will be plenty for England to take away from the Stade de Suisse.

"I know this game is contentious but I think the manager picked a good squad, an intelligent squad," he said.

"He wanted to rest some of the players and give some young players a chance to be involved in an international game.

"I think its actually a very beneficial game for us."

Hodgson saw Theo Walcott pull out of the game with a thigh injury on Tuesday morning, with the Arsenal winger joining teammate Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Chelsea's Daniel Sturridge and Manchester City number one Joe Hart in withdrawing.

He is likely to use the occasion to blood stars of the future such as Chelsea full-back Ryan Bertrand and Birmingham City's 19-year-old goalkeeper Jack Butland, but he also wants a win to boost confidence ahead of the World Cup campaign.

"I think both ourselves and Italy are going to go out and try to win the game - there's no question about that," he said.

Inexpensive Overhead Solutions to Start Your Small Business

Every budding entrepreneur wants to know how to start a business on a budget. It practically comes with the territory. Much of the time, people are trying to bootstrap their way into an alternative income stream or at the very least make a little money on the side. (See also: 5 Tools for Handling Your Receipt Trail from the Road) One of the main ways you can save money on any new biz is to spend as little as possible on your office or retail overhead. Here are some of my top tips for doing so.

Recommended:?One of the most frustrating tasks for a business owner is keeping track of receipts,?luckily?technology?has?made this task easier. Currently I use an app on my iPhone that takes a picture of receipts and enters it in manually, ready for tax time. Shoeboxed has both free and paid versions, I suggest you try out the free one and see if you?ll need/want a paid version. You can see our Shoeboxed review here.?[Added by Editor]

Shipping Containers

Hey, they?re not just for modern home design anymore. Some of the businesses I?ve seen run out of creatively-remodeled shipping containers over the years include an internet caf?, a burger takeout joint, a bar, impromptu office space and even an independently-run, second-hand music store in Fairbanks, Alaska.

Cargo Trailers

I?ve written before about this money-saving vehicle alternative, but I think cargo trailers deserve an additional shout out when it comes to affordable retail space. First of all, they allow you to take advantage of typically underutilized retail space such as overly-large parking lots near employee-heavy businesses, can be run out of a parking space with municipal electrical access and can even be transported from site to site to participate in large events like state fairs, concerts and expansive farmers? markets. You can also tow them behind work trucks for a cheap-to-launch mobile biz. Examples of how you can use cargo trailers for a small business include lunch trucks, specialty food sales, mobile pet grooming, minor home contract work and more.

One of the simplest ideas I ever saw using this overhead solution was a business that rented out shade umbrellas, portable cabanas and beach chairs by the sea. It was a biz they could tow to work every day, sit in the shade and work on their novel in between customer rentals and pack up in less than an hour to head home at night. With a busy enough beach, you could afford to hire a responsible teenager or two to run the gig for you and still have plenty of additional cash to pocket for yourself.

Bicycle-Towed Cart

This is basically a miniaturized version of the above idea for people on an extreme startup budget or those who simply don?t want a larger cart or the expense of a towing vehicle. Granted, you?ll have to choose a less elaborate range of offerings in order to be able to roll with the size restriction, but that doesn?t mean you still won?t be able to make a little bit of extra cash on the side. Gourmet coffee stands, hot dog carts, artisan craft booths and even sundry shops featuring incidentals like lip balm and sunglasses can be operated using this simple, low-cost start up method.

Online Platforms Such as Hub Pages or Squidoo

If you?re looking for a work-at-home experience with your laptop and internet connection being the only startup costs, then online writing and affiliate marketing offer you an inexpensive, two-pronged business approach that you can grow at your own pace. Simply sign up for a writing account, followed by accounts with the allowed advertisers and sales entities such as Google Adsense, Kontera, InfoLinks, Amazon and even Ebay. Additionally, you can incorporate affiliate marketing efforts for individual retailers you have a relationship with when and if you deem it appropriate. People are making anywhere from additional spending money to a full time living on these platforms, and you can too. Bonus? There?s no need to take out a small business loan. In a pinch, you can even start writing at the library. So if times are tight and you find yourself in the middle of a difficult career transition, this might be the option for you.

Spare Bedroom

It?s no secret that working from home can be a huge money saver. In addition to skipping the commuting costs and the need for an extensive corporate wardrobe, your office space is essentially free. Granted, you will have to count on a slight increase in electrical and water costs (provided you don?t have your own well), but this is peanuts compared to fuel, biz lunches out and increased insurance costs.

Alley Space Rental

If bar ownership has long been one of your dreams, you may want to consider the al fresco option. Two places I?ve seen this done extremely effectively are Bangkok, Thailand and Tampa, Florida?s Ybor City. Essentially, you operate your business like a beach bar, sans beach. Umbrella-covered tables, house plant street buffers, a few white lights and a bar area that can be secured by rolling down smaller versions of typical garage doors. A few tunes and the proper permits complete the business plan. This isn?t for everyone, but it is an option and can be accomplished with a fair bit of flair, if you?re willing to think outside of the box.

Starting your own small business doesn?t have to break the bank. Another thing to remember is that not every revenue stream has to equal the annual salary of the average hedge fund manager. Everyone has to start somewhere and this list of options gives you several affordable ways in which to do so.

LET'S RUN TWO TODAY

The fastest men in the world on one of the fastest tracks around. Should make for an electric night in the 100-meter dash.

Usain Bolt, Yohan Blake and the rest of a blazing will run in the semifinals, with the fastest advancing to the finals on Sunday night.

Bolt was just OK in the preliminaries on Saturday, starting poorly on his way to a 10.09. That's good for sixth fastest, but the world record holder says he feels great heading into the big day. Americans Ryan Bailey and Justin Gatlin are also in the mix.

"My legs are great. My training has been great," Bolt says. "I'm feeling better."

ANYONE FOR ENNIS?

This wasn't a competition. It was a coronation.

With a healthy lead in the heptathlon, Britain's Olympic poster girl Jessica Ennis could almost have walked around the final event, the 800 meters. But the roars of 80,000 fans carried her over the line in first place.

As she headed around the second and last lap, the Olympic Stadium announcer implored the crowd to make more noise. And, somehow, they did. And they carried her over the line in first place.

I've been in some noisy stadiums in my time (vuvuzelas in South Africa, anybody?) but this felt ? I could physically feel the roar ? like the loudest by far.

A 29-year-old firefighter from California is preparing to compete in the quarterfinals of the sprint tournament, track cycling's blue-ribbon event.

Jimmy Watkins is a full-time firefighter who keeps a bike next to his fire engine so he can train. He's says he's appreciative of all of the guys who are covering his shifts back home at the Kern County Fire Department so he can compete.

"Everybody is just super supportive. It's cool to know that you have a lot of people behind you. It make you not want to let them down because a lot of people have sacrificed a lot for me to be here," Watkins said. "I just want to make sure that I don't waste any of their effort."

The Somali-born Farah embraced his wife, and their young daughter on the track after his Olympic winning run. Tania had earlier joked that being at the stadium at all was probably a risk. The raucous atmosphere, she suggested, could send her into labor early.

She said she'd even checked that there would be doctors on hand at the stadium. Just in case.

MINI MINIS

They are electric, radio controlled, pretty nippy and represent a British icon.

They are the three "mini Minis" introduced to the field of play to shuttle javelins, discuses, shots and hammers from the field back to the throwing area.

BMW say that the vehicles ? approximately a quarter scale of the full sized version ? will save valuable time during the competition.

Specially trained Gamesmakers are operating the cars - but from what I saw they could still do with a bit of practice.

One drove into a microphone and distance marker on Saturday evening, knocking them askew.

However, it doesn't sound like it is all hard work for the little cars who are expected to cover about 6-kilometers per four hour shift - a member of the stadium staff whispered to me that when everyone had left on Friday night the mini Minis were seen racing each other down the athletics track.

MEDAL DREAMS DASHED

South Korea's soccer team beat Britain 5-4 in a penalty shootout on Saturday night, ending the host country's hopes for an Olympic medal in the sport it invented.

Britain hadn't fielded a men's Olympic soccer team since 1960, and there's no guarantee that the nation will field another unified team. With opposition from the football associations of Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, few see any chance of another team at the 2016 Rio Games.

STAMPS OF APPROVAL

Britons are busy celebrating their record Olympic gold medal haul, but some are working harder than others to mark the occasion.

Spare a thought for the staff at Britain's Royal Mail, who are working overtime to rush out special next-day stamps for each of the six gold medals won by British athletes Saturday.

The Royal Mail has promised fans that a celebratory stamp will be issued within 24 hours of each British gold medal win.

The mail service says it has never before issued stamps on a Sunday ? it would be hard put to find a better reason to break the rule.

THE CROWD LIFTS

"If it wasn't for the crowd I don't think that would happen. They give you that lift, that boost. A lot of people thought having the Olympics in London was a lot of pressure. Obviously there is pressure, but sometimes you can't think about it. You've just got to use the crowd. I think every single one of us who won a gold medal used the crowd." ? Britain's Mo Farah, gold medal winner in the 10,000 meter race.

MORE GOLD FOR FRASER-PRYCE

A milestone for Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce arrived as a milestone passed for her country.

"I want to tell Jamaica: Happy 50th anniversary," said Fraser-Pryce, fresh from her second consecutive gold medal for the women's 100 meters Saturday night. This weekend marks 50 years since the country became independent from Britain.

Fraser-Pryce closed ground over the last 20 meters and leaning at the line to win in 10.75 seconds and edge American Carmelita Jeter by .03 seconds. Another Jamaican, Veronica Campbell-Brown, finished third for her second career 100-meter bronze.

When the scoreboard finally flashed her in the No. 1 position, Fraser-Pryce dropped to the ground and cried. She ran to the stands, grabbed a Jamaican flag and paraded around with her teammate, Campbell-Brown, known as "VCB" on the island. She's not finished in London yet, either. VCB is the two-time defending champion in the 200, where she'll have Fraser-Pryce to contend with again, along with American Allyson Felix.

FOR AURORA

Missy Franklin's breakout performance in the London Games has given the grief-stricken town of Aurora, Colo., a whole lot to smile about. Franklin capped a brilliant Olympic debut with a gold medal in the 4x100 individual medley relay on Saturday night, giving her four gold medals and a bronze.

"I hope this means a lot to them," Franklin says. "I have constantly been thinking about them throughout this whole time. Everything I did here is dedicated to them."

Franklin is from the Denver suburb of Centennial and goes to high school in Aurora, where a mass shooting in a movie theater on July 20 shook the town to its core.

"It was so, so terrible what happened and it's still hard to believe it really did happen," Franklin says. "I hope that I was able to bring some smiles back to Colorado. The supportive tweets and Facebook posts I've been getting, so many people have been saying that I've been doing that. That just means the world to me."

ENNIS' GOLD

She grinned, blew kisses, and jumped up and down. Then Jessica Ennis leaned in for her gold medal, grinning ear to ear as the crowd roared and the music played ? "God Save the Queen."

Before the medal ceremony, Ennis said of how she felt: "Massive relief. To come into this event with all that pressure with everyone just saying 'Oh, you are going to win gold. You are going to win gold.' I know how hard it has been to win it. Yeah, I just can't believe I've done it. All that pressure is off me now. It's so nice."

For Britain, this is a moment to remember.

THEY ROAR FOR MO

Olympic Stadium is roaring for Mo Farah, and for the rest of his family.

The British distance runner turned on the jets on the final lap to run away with the men's 10,000 meters on Saturday night. Farah collapsed to the track in tears, then made the shape of a heart to tell 80,000 adoring fans that the feeling was mutual.

Minutes later, Farah's wife and stepdaughter met him on the track, and he scooped up his little girl in a warm embrace.

The family posed for pictures as the cheers continued, a family portrait that will be difficult to top.

PARTING GIFT

One last ovation, one last trophy, one last ceremony for Michael Phelps.

FINA president Julio Maglione honored Phelps with a special individual ceremony on the final night of his record-breaking Olympic career. Phelps finishes his career with a record 22 career medals and 18 golds.

Maglione handed Phelps a silver trophy to commemorate his brilliant career, and the touching gesture leaves just one question unanswered:

Shouldn't the trophy have been gold, too?

PIXIE CUT

Chinese table tennis player Ding Ning is getting some good reviews at the Olympics for her trendy hairstyle ? a short pixie cut with warm highlights.

(Coming clean: As a man with a shaved head, I had to do research to get the description right.)

"I like my hairstyle," the 22-year-old said Saturday. "I think it kind of suits my personality. It is kind of bright and lively. There isn't a special reason why I dyed my hair this color. At times I like to change things around and get a new look."
