Dilshan set to miss first Test with back niggle ? Cricket News Roundup ? Part III ? November 16, 2012
Experienced Sri Lanka batsman Tillakaratne Dilshan has been ruled out of the first Test of the two-match series against New Zealand due to a back injury he had sustained during the ODI series against the Kiwis last month.
The veteran top-order batsman had sustained the niggle before the third One Day International of the five-match series. After scoring an unbeaten century in the third one-dayer, the all-rounder missed the final two fixtures of the ODI series as the Sri Lankan team management did not want to risk with the niggle.
It was hoped that Dilshan would recover in time for the Test series opener but skipper Mahela Jayawardene revealed on Friday that he was still not 100 per cent fit and would sit out the match, starting in Galle from Saturday, November 17, 2012.
"Dilshan has not come good with his back problem. We had a scan done," Jayawardene told media reporters on the eve of the match. "We assessed him on Wednesday and he wasn't 100%, so we gave him this Test off and a week to see whether he could be fit for the next Test," he added further. Uncapped Dimuth Karunaratne?will replace Dilshan at the top of the order, confirmed the Sri Lankan skipper.
England spin bowler Graeme Swann has expressed his excitement over beating Jim Laker?s record of most Test scalps by an English spinner (193).
?It is a proud moment. I'm always saying I'm not one for stats. But when people told me I was near to Jim Laker, I was genuinely excited,? the ace spinner said of his new record at the post day media interaction.
The Nottinghamshire offie picked up four wickets on the opening day of the first Test against India, including prized scalps of Sehwag and Tendulkar as well, to break Laker?s record that has stood for more than 50 years.
Former India skipper and legendary batsman Sunil Gavaskar has said that the emerging NO. 3 batsman Cheteshwar Pujara would have to perform well in the overseas conditions as well to prove himself a fitting replacement for Rahul Dravid.
?He?s got a very good temperament...but the real test...comes overseas and that's where he?ll have to show whether he is an able replacement for Rahul Dravid," the veteran Maharashtra batsman said in an interview with a TV channel.
Playing only his sixth Test match, Pujara, 24, smashed an unbeaten 206 to put India in the driver?s seat against England in the ongoing first Test at Ahmedabad. After declaring the first innings at 521 for 8 in the final session on Day two, the hosts had the Poms reeling at 41 for 3 at stumps on Friday.
