Seattle University (0-2) hosted the University of Washington (2-0) in a cross-town battle, but came up just short of the victory, as the Huskies won, 77-75, in overtime.
?I want to congratulate Washington; it was a hard fought game. This was a game of runs and we had some runs early, but we were sloppy with the basketball in the first half, and they took advantage of that. We knew we had a size advantage and a power advantage inside, which at times we took advantage of. Sylvia [Shephard] got hot in the second half and showed her athleticism, and it just came down to some decision making and missed shots at the end.?
Seattle U got on the board first, as Ashley Ward (Irvine, Calif.) hit a three-pointer at 17:48, but Washington quickly took the 5-3 lead behind a quick layup by Mercedes Wetmore and a three-pointer by Jazmine Davis.
The Redhawks tied the score and regained the lead following layups by Renee Dillard-Brown (Seattle, Wash.) and Kacie Sowell (Ventura, Calif.) to lead 7-5 at the first media timeout.
Sylvia Shephard (Alta Loma, Calif.) added a three-pointer at 15:29 as part of the Redhawks? 11-0 run, during which they took the 14-6 lead, but the Huskies added a pair of three?s to be down by two, 14-12, with 11:34 left in the first half.
Taelor Ross (Vancouver, Wash.) scored her first collegiate points with a jumper at 10:42, but five straight points by UW gave them the lead, 17-16.
The Redhawks again went ahead, 21-17, on five straight points by Shephard and added to their lead, 23-17, on a layup by Sowell.
Washington, on a 10-0 run, including a jumper and a layup by Kristi Kingma, tied the score, 23-23, and went ahead, 27-23, at the 4:04 mark.
The two teams traded layups and the Redhawks found themselves down by five, 32-27, at the half.
Sowell brought the Redhawks within three, 32-29, with a layup to open the second half, but a three-pointer by UW?s Talia Walton increased the Husky lead, 35-29.
The Redhawks came back within three, 35-32, but Davis hit her fourth three-pointer of the evening to take the Husky lead to six, 38-32.
Seattle U regained the lead, 42-41, behind two straight three-pointers by Shephard and Ward near the 15 minute mark.
The score tied at 44, Walton hit a three-pointer at 12:21 to put UW up, 47-44. The two teams traded layups and the Redhawks remained down by three, 49-46, at the under 12 media timeout.
Ross added at jumper at 7:14 to again bring SU back within three, 53-50, and to increase her season/career high single game points to four.
The Huskies took an eight-point lead at 6:24, 58-50, following a layup by Walton and a three-pointer by Kingma. Washington increased the lead to 10, 60-50, on a jumper by Wetmore at 5:06, their largest lead of the game.
Seattle U fought back to within six, 62-56, and Kingma and Ward traded three-pointers to keep the margin at six, 65-59, with 1:58 remaining.
The resilient Redhawks fought back to within one, 65-64, on a layup by Ward and a three-pointer by Shephard.? With five second remaining, Daidra Brown (Seattle, Wash.) made one of two free-throws to tie the game, 65-65, sending the game into overtime.
Seattle U kept the lead, or a tie, until 2:07 left in the overtime period when Walton hit a jumper to put the Huskies back up by one, 72-71.? Despite the Redhawks coming within one point one other time, 74-73, with 1:26 remaining, the Huskies would keep the lead for the remainder of the contest and come away with the narrow victory, 77-75, in overtime.
Washington led in field-goals (42.5 percent to 39.2 percent) and three-point field-goals (40.0 percent and 28.0 percent), but Seattle U led in free-throws (62.5 percent to 27.3 percent).
Sowell recorded her second double-double in as many games this season, leading the team with 22 points and 14 rebounds. Shephard also recorded a double-double, with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Ward recorded 17 points for the Redhawks.
The Huskies were led by Kingma, with 22 points, and three other players scored in double figures.
