Manila, Philippines ? Like it or not, our lives have been altered tremendously by technology. Our lives are rapidly changing ? constantly! Our kids are growing up in a world where Amazon, Apple, Facebook, Google, Twitter and even Instagram are changing how they study, how we work, communicate and live. But is this a good or bad thing?
Let?s go back in time and imagine when a large bookstore might have had 100,000 books available. Today online retailers (e.g., Amazon) have millions of books to sell. Back then, there were no smartphones?just simple mobile phones and land lines. Social media then consisted of BBS?s and email; now we have Facebook and Twitter.
A 1990s personal computer had only basic capabilities (word processing, spread sheets, and a few others). Now an iMac has the power of an earlier generation?s supercomputer.
Some may deem this revolutionary but I guess it is a matter of perception. For one thing, an innovation is such when it changes society that going back to the pre-innovation technology would be catastrophic. So far, many of our most recent innovations are incremental, not revolutionary.
Meaning, even if we revert back to basics, we would still survive. Take for instance, cars! If all motor vehicles vanish tomorrow, the result would be catastrophic. If all phones (land lines and mobiles) suddenly stop working?the result would be disastrous for communication. But let?s imagine that all social media disappear. Would the economy collapse? No way! If Amazon, AyosDito or Tipid.com closes shop would we all die a horrible death? Maybe some of us would sulk and hide but die? Ehhrrr, probably not! But admittedly, Social media has been both helpful and detrimental depending on how we use (and abuse) it. Lemme just point out how I think it can be good for your business.
The business sector is an important part of our society. Every business has to adapt to those changes in order to fend. One of the most significant contributions of our technology is the Internet. And biz owners have to catch up to fully utilize its power. The Internet gave birth to social media. It allows people to connect with each other through the different types of social media.
There are six types of social media as of the moment and these include social networks (e.g., Facebook and Google+), blogs (e.g., WordPress), wikis, podcasts, forums, content communities, video sharing sites like YouTube, and micro blogging sites like Twitter.
The evolution of this form of media has changed the way people, orgs, and businesses interact with each other. It gave us an efficient avenue to communicate and exchange ideas ? Real Time! It also allows us the opportunity to promote our businesses, brand and products to a wider audience anywhere and anytime. Social Media has now become a new avenue to marketers. Companies are even looking at building ?social media communities.? This is fast becoming a lucrative alternative.
